Laser assisted hatching is a scientific technique that can improve the implantation of embryos into a woman uterine lining. A small artificial hole is made in the zona of an embryo by focusing laser beam over the zona pellucida making a small opening, between 10-20 microns. It is thought that the embryo can then hatch more easily through this hole and hopefully increase the chance of the embryo implanting.
Thick and hard zona pellucida
- The problem of a harder zona pellucida is that the embryo may not hatch and thus not attach to the woman womb where hatching of the embryo is necessary to achieve pregnancy. It has been reported that up to 75% of normal embryos may never hatch.
- Laser assisted hatching helps to increase pregnancy rates by improving implantation rates, since embryo hatching is facilitated.
Time of performing
- Laser assisted hatching is performed just before the embryo transfer procedure and can be performed on embryos at the early cleavage stages (that is two or three days after the egg collection) and at the blastocyst stage (five or six days after the egg collection).
Who might benefit
- Patients with day 3 embryos having a thick Zona where older than 37 years of age, have a tendency to produce eggs with a harder zona pellucida than younger women.
- Patients with failed previous IVF/ICSI cycles.
- Women with a high Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) level.
- Patients undergoing IVF/ICSI for the first time, who are considered poor responders because they have required a high dose of gonadotropins for poor ovarian response.
- Patients who in an earlier IVF cycle had low fertilisation rate, resulting in three or fewer embryos.
- Patients who request laser assisted hatching and are fully informed of its use and function.
Pregnancy cannot occur unless the human embryo hatches.
